REGISTERING TO VOTE
You must have resided in North Carolina and in the precinct in which you present to vote for at least 30 days prior to the election. You must register to vote at your current address at least 25 days before Election Day. For this year’s Second Primary Election on May 14, the deadline was February 9. You can download the form for printing at buncombecounty.org/governing/depts/election/voter-registration.aspx, or pick up a registration form at the Buncombe County BOE or any Buncombe County Library or public high school.

Only newly naturalized citizens or people who have been convicted of a felony and completed their supervised release can register on May 14 at their assigned precinct. To register, you will need either a photo ID or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government. document, with your current address.

You also have the option to register to vote or change your address or party affiliation online only if you have a NC Driver’s License or DMV-issued ID. Go to payments.ncdot.gov/.

Early voting runs from April 25 – May 11 at the Election Services Office, 59 Woodfin Place, Asheville from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturday, May 11 (the last Saturday before the second Primary Election on May 14) from 8 a.m.–3 p.m.

CHECKING YOUR REGISTRATION
Guard against elections database tampering and make sure you are properly registered.

Use the Voter Lookup Tool at the NC State Board of Elections to check your registration. Go to ncsbe.gov/Voters/Voter-Tools  and click on Voter Lookup on the left side. Fill in your first and last names and your County, then click on Search. Click on your name to see your registration information. If it’s not correct, contact the Buncombe Board of Elections (BOE) at 1-828-250-4200.

 

ABSENTEE BALLOTS
Anyone can vote by mail – no reason need be given. You can find all the information you need for Absentee voting at buncombecounty.org/vote.

There are two ways to request an Absentee Ballot:

1)  Online: Fill out and submit the Absentee Ballot request form online at votebymail.ncsbe.gov/app/home.
2)  By paper: Print out the form at the BOE website: buncombecounty.org/common/election/absentee-ballot-request-form.pdf

After completing, submit the form to the BOE in person* at 59 Woodfin Place, Asheville 28801 or send by mail to PO Box 7468, Asheville 28802-7468.

*In-person delivery is permitted only by the voter or near relative. Near relative is defined as spouse, sibling, parent/step-parent, mother/father-in-law, child/stepchild, son/daughter-in-law, grandparent/child

Once your 2024 State Absentee Ballot Request Form has been received, an Absentee Ballot will be mailed to you.

Note: Two people or a notary public must observe you mark your absentee ballot but not observe which candidates you voted for.

Once your ballot is completed you can mail or hand deliver your Absentee Ballot. Civilian absentee voters must return the container-return envelope with the voted ballot enclosed to their county board of elections no later than 7:30 pm on Second Primary Election Day, May 14th.

Absentee ballots must be received on by 7:30 pm on Second Primary Election Day, May 14, to be counted. There is no longer a grace period for mailed absentee ballots.

Hand-delivered Absentee Ballots must be delivered to the BOE at 59 Woodfin Place, Asheville by Tuesday, May 14th at 7:30 pm or at any early voting location. It must be delivered by the voter or near relative* (see definition above) only. You cannot turn in an absentee ballot at your polling location on Election Day.

VOTER ID
Photo ID IS required for all voters. Please check the Board of Elections website for the latest information.

EARLY VOTING
Voting early is easy and convenient. Early voting runs from April 25 through May 11th.
Monday – Friday, 8 am-7:30 pm, Saturday, May 11, 8 am-3 pm, at the Elections Services Office at 59 Woodfin Place, Asheville.

You can vote at any of scheduled sites. You can vote at a time and day that is convenient for you and avoid the possibility that something might come up on Election Day to prevent you going to the polls.
