Boards of elections statewide canvassed votes from the 2022 midterm elections on Friday, Nov. 18. This process allows each county to certify its votes and report them to the state.

“It’s very important,” Henderson County Director of Elections Karen Hebb said. “That’s why, if we have any questions, that people ask, ‘How do I know my vote counts?’ We tell them to come to canvass. We go over every single ballot that’s cast.”

The canvass period is held 10 days after the election. The process is open to the public, allowing for a transparent view of the proceeding.

“It’s essential,” canvass monitor Kathy Walsh said. “It’s trust. It’s the basis of our democratic republic. This is really what makes our country a democracy. This whole experience has heartened me. There’s just, how anyone thinks you could pull a fast one on voters. I see how careful and consciously they are observing the rules here.”

  • Buncombe County Certified – 120,558 votes
  • Henderson County Certified – 51,387 votes
  • Jackson County Certified – 15,092 votes

“The right to vote is central to being an American,” Buncombe County Election Services director Corinne Duncan said. “So, having that confidence in the process is very important.”

Following the local certification of the votes, they are sent to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
